Andrea Van Dunk
Mathematics Teacher
[email protected]

With 16 years of experience, Andrea Van Dunk brings her expertise and enthusiasm for math education to her classroom. Holding a B.S. in Mathematics from Vanguard University and both an M.A. in Teaching and an M.A. in School Leadership, Andrea’s approach to teaching is grounded in the belief that anyone can learn anything with the right mindset and support.

Andrea’s teaching philosophy emphasizes problem-solving and collaboration. She encourages students to tackle non-routine problems, work together to deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts, and develop 21st-century skills like effective communication and creativity. Her classroom fosters an environment where students are not just learning math but are also making connections between big ideas and practical applications. Andrea champions mastery grading, focusing on student growth over time rather than traditional letter grades.

At HArts, Andrea is particularly proud of her work with her students on projects like using Desmos to graphically recreate images for their IDP (Individual Development Plan). She enjoys teaching Families of Functions and Inverse Functions, helping students see the relationships and patterns in mathematics that extend beyond the classroom.

In addition to her role in the classroom, Andrea serves as the 9th-grade class advisor, math department chair, and testing coordinator. She is also the advisor for Key Club, helping students develop leadership and service skills through community engagement.

Outside of teaching, Andrea finds balance by investing in herself and her family. She enjoys crocheting, gardening, and spending time outdoors. She also loves to sing and listen to audiobooks as a way to unwind.

Andrea has been recognized for her contributions to education with the Golden Apple Award in 2019, and one of her proudest achievements is becoming National Board Certified. She is excited to implement "Building Thinking Classrooms" this year, focusing on student-centered learning and engagement.

A fun fact about Andrea is that she grew up in New Jersey. Most of all, Andrea loves her job, working with Ana Hernandez,  and is passionate about helping her students succeed in their mathematical journeys.
